Venturing out on an E-Scooter in the streets of London may sound exhilarating, but it’s also considered a risky affair, as per a study shared by my mum via WhatsApp. The looming threats of theft and accidents are large, with even public scooters susceptible to battery theft. However, nestled in the serene landscape of Mamzar Beach, a different narrative unfolds. Here, electric scooters are scattered like hidden gems, beckoning riders to explore the scenic beachside pathways. With restrictions in place, allowing only beachside rides, I finally mustered the courage to take the plunge and embark on this adventure. By that I mean, I finally grew a pair and went for a ride (Pun intended). Choosing the unconventional time of 2am on a Sunday, I found myself immersed in an extraordinary ambiance.
As Ramadan draws to a close and anticipation mounts for the joyous Eid celebrations, the hours leading up to Iftar in Dubai witness a flurry of activity. Amidst the hustle of preparations—adornments of traditional clothing, sumptuous feasts, and delightful assortments of dates and desserts—the city's nightlife undergoes a remarkable transformation. Restaurants extend their operating hours well into the early hours of the morning, offering families and couples the opportunity to dine out and savour the festive atmosphere. Meanwhile, a plethora of family-friendly events adds to the vibrancy of the evening. Being able to see 'disco' lights shine in the sky from miles away. Yet, amidst this lively backdrop, Mamzar Beach stands as a tranquil oasis, inviting a different kind of experience. The peaceful ambiance of the beachfront evokes a myriad of emotions, almost lulling you into a state of serenity that beckons you to sleep until the break of dawn. Allow me to delve deeper into this enchanting paradox.
As I scanned the barcode on the E-Scooter, a tune echoed from it signalling a success in connection. Despite the myriad of daring escapades I've encountered in life, there was still a rush of adrenaline coursing through my veins in that moment was perplexing... for a damn scooter. With the instructional video from the app fresh in my mind, I positioned my foot onto the E-Scooter, propelled myself forward with a push of my right foot, and hesitantly pressed the 'Go' button. Suddenly, I found myself hurtling forward, caught off guard by the unexpected acceleration.
"Weeeeeeeee," I hummed joyfully to myself as I manoeuvred the E-Scooter, a grin plastered across my face like a carefree ten-year-old, the wind exhilaratingly brushing across my face. To my left, families lounged comfortably on Kaleens (traditional rugs), relishing in leisurely picnics, while couples shared moments on nearby benches keeping an eye on their little ones zipped around on their non-electric scooters, their laughter echoing the pure joy of movement (clearly envious of my speed). On my right, the sandy expanse of the beach stretched out before me, its tranquility juxtaposed by the rhythmic sounds of exercise enthusiasts engaging in pull-ups and bench presses on the beach gym. In the distance, the dark waters shimmered, their depths hinting at mysteries unseen, evoking a sense of both wonder and unease. Amidst it all, people gathered on the shoreline, some daringly allowing the cold tide to lap at their feet, while kids laughed and played, their mothers keeping a watchful eye. The beach restaurants buzzed with activity, their expansive seating areas overflowing with hungry customers. A glance at this vibrant tapestry of humanity underscored the rich diversity that defines Dubai. Yes, they most of them followed one religion but in that were people from dozens of countries, as well as people given the opportunity to explore - like myself.
As I continued my journey, my eyes were drawn to a small yet exquisitely adorned mosque nestled in the heart of the footpath. Just outside, a designated area welcomed worshippers to lay their prayer mats. As I rounded the corner, I was met with a heartwarming sight: about twenty men dressed in their traditional Shalwar Kameez attire, their Taqiyahs resting atop their heads, engaged in prayer with remarkable synchronicity. Across from them, their wives and children sat, diligently preparing homemade food, infusing the atmosphere with a profound sense of serenity and familial devotion. Amidst the gentle hum of passing E-Scooters and the cars, a sense of peace prevailed, accentuated by the harmonious rhythm of prayer and communal unity.
Families gathered wherever they could carve out space for themselves, while further along, a group of Pakistani men engaged in a spirited game of cricket. Continuing my exploration, I stumbled upon the beginning of a footpath extending out into the sea. Intrigued, I paused my E-Scooter and ventured forth. With each step, the silhouette of palm trees revealed intermittent glimpses of fellow beachgoers until I reached the path's end, where I stood gazing out into the darkness of the sea. The pitch black abyss stretched endlessly before me, with only the faint glow of lights illuminating the shoreline offering any semblance of orientation. The vastness of the unknown was chilling. Amidst the eerie tranquility, I found myself in an awkward situation: an Indian couple, their voices tinged with emotion, reached a somber conclusion to their relationship. While I believe in supporting love, I couldn't help but question who on Earth picks this timing and setting for a conversation. The woman's eyes were clearly watering up, yet she maintained her composure in the public space. As the tension mounted, I heard splashing in the water and thought "that's my cue to leave, it's probably a shark". I made my escape, pondering the complexities of human relationships as I distanced myself from the scene.
Remounting my E-Scooter, I ventured to the opposite side of the beach, where the illuminated skyline of towering buildings greeted me. Here, the expanse was more spacious, attracting clusters of teenagers enjoying their independence away from family gatherings. Laughter filled the air as they playfully chased one another, injecting a youthful energy into the atmosphere. Occasionally, I encountered other E-Scooters zipping past, with their vibrant lights and blaring music. Show off. After an hour of leisurely riding. I turned back, retracing my route along the shoreline.
Amidst the tranquility and joy spread across the beach, there was always one constant: a lone figure seated on a bench, cigarette in hand, engrossed in a phone call. These individuals, separated from their families by mere hours of distance but worlds apart in experience, found solace in the sanctuary of this place. For them, moments spent on this bench likely offered a fleeting sense of connection to loved ones left behind, a reassurance that despite the miles that separated them, their families were safe and secure. It was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who toil in Dubai, far from home, working tirelessly to provide for their families. Each puff of smoke carried with it a silent testament to their resilience and unwavering commitment to ensuring the happiness and well-being of their loved ones, even amidst the challenges of life in a foreign land.
